My home is flooded: safety, documentation and choosing help
SocialCode Directory editorial guidance. Editorial guidance reviewed October 28, 2026. Company availability and credentials require separate confirmation.
What should I do first?
If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Follow evacuation instructions. Do not enter standing water near electrical equipment or touch wet electrical equipment. Reentry and utility safety need appropriate professionals; finding a contractor comes after personal safety.
What information should I gather?
When safe, record the affected rooms, the apparent source of water and when you noticed it. Photograph visible damage without putting yourself at risk. Contact your insurer about its reporting process. Do not send customer claim files, private financial details or photographs of people to this directory.
What do I ask the restoration company?
Ask whether it serves your exact address, handles your type of water damage, and can confirm current availability. Ask what emergency mitigation includes, who documents moisture and drying, whether repairs are included or separately contracted, and who will be your contact. A published 24-hour number is not a confirmed arrival time.
How do I compare the cost and scope?
Request a written scope, authorization terms, itemized estimate, payment terms and an explanation of changes that require your approval. Confirm what is temporary mitigation and what is reconstruction. A directory listing cannot determine your property's price, insurer coverage or claim outcome.
How do I check qualifications?
Ask for current insurance and any license required for the work in your jurisdiction. Check claimed certifications with the issuing organization. An IICRC certification is different from a government contractor license. Company statements and independently checked credentials are identified separately.
Can I compare companies without paying?
Yes. Browse published services, service areas, source links and unanswered questions, save a shortlist, and contact companies directly. Sponsored placement is advertising, not a safety certification or a guarantee of workmanship.
